"Midwives" by Chris Bohjalian

Did Sibyl's final diary entry change any of the opinions you formed during the course of reading about the trial?  If you had any firm ideas about home versus hospital birth, have they been changed by reading this book? Do you think that lay midwives should be allowed to practice? Would you trust yourself to the care of a midwife, or would you go to a hospital for delivery by a doctor?

I really, really enjoyed Midwives. This was very surprising to me as, having given birth twice, 9lbs each, one without medication, and NEVER want to be pregnant again...

I liked that it was set in the 80's, things seemed simple and nice where they lived, (when it wasn't drowning in mud) and I liked the dynamic of Sibyl's family. I enjoyed the home birth point of view, though I would never choose it for myself. I loved how open they were with the daughter, Connie, talking about where babies come from and everything. It was SO taboo in my house growing up. Connie was a tough cookie and I loved that. Hiding those diary pages, smart girl...Took control of her familys fate...
